Dehorning is the process of removing the horns of livestock; cattle, sheep and goats are sometimes dehorned for economic and safety reasons, since horns can pose a risk to humans, other animals and the bearers of the horns themselves, being sometimes caught in fences or preventing feeding. Disbudding is a related but different process performed early in an animal's life, cauterizing and thus destroying horn buds before they have grown into horns, and not all horned livestock are disbudded.
