Pediatric spaying, also called prepuberal or early spaying, is the practice of performing an ovariohysterectomy (spaying) or orchidectomy (castration, also called neutering) on a kitten or puppy between six and fourteen weeks of age, well before the animal would otherwise reach sexual maturity. Both procedures are sterilization surgeries that prevent the animal from reproducing, and veterinary literature also refers to them collectively as gonadectomies.
