A cannulated cow, also called a fistulated cow, is a cow that has been surgically fitted with a cannula, a porthole-like device that provides direct access to the rumen. The cannula allows veterinarians and researchers to sample and analyze the contents of the cow digestive system and to transfer rumen contents from one cow to another, a technique used to help restore healthy digestion in cattle whose own rumen function has been disrupted. The practice of rumen cannulation was first documented in 1928 by Arthur Frederick Schalk and R. S. Amadon of the North Dakota Agricultural College.
