Declawing, medically termed onychectomy, is a surgical procedure that amputates all or part of the last bone of an animal's toes to remove the claw at its source, since the claw grows from tissue within that bone. Long a routine procedure in North America, chiefly on cats, it is now recognized to cause both pain and behavioral changes in the animal, and a growing number of countries classify elective declawing as a form of animal cruelty.
