Hoof trimming is the cutting and shaping of the hooves of domesticated ungulates such as cattle and horses to prevent overgrowth that can cause lameness. Hooves grow continuously, and animals kept in captivity wear them down less than animals moving freely over natural terrain would, so regular trimming with tools such as angle grinders and hoof knives is used to correct weight distribution; in dairy cattle, where roughly ninety five percent of lameness occurs in the feet, hoof care is treated as an economic necessity for the farm as much as a matter of animal welfare.
