Autogenic training is a relaxation technique first published by the German psychiatrist Johannes Heinrich Schultz in 1932. The technique involves repeated visualizations paired with vocal self-suggestions that induce a state of relaxation, based on passive concentration on bodily perceptions such as heaviness and warmth in the limbs. It is used to alleviate many stress-induced psychosomatic disorders, and Schultz developed it after becoming dissatisfied with psychoanalysis and drawing on research into hypnosis and sleep conducted with the neurologist Oscar Vogt.
