Guided imagery, also known as guided affective imagery or katathym-imaginative psychotherapy, is a mind-body intervention in which a trained practitioner or teacher helps a participant evoke and generate mental images that simulate or recreate sensory perception, sights, sounds, tastes, smells, movements and touch such as texture, temperature and pressure, as well as imaginative content that may defy conventional sensory categories and precipitate strong emotions or feelings in the absence of the stimuli that would ordinarily produce them. The practitioner may facilitate the process in person, to an individual or a group, in person or virtually, or the participant may instead follow guidance from a sound recording, video or other audiovisual media carrying spoken instruction, sometimes accompanied by music or sound.
