Manual lymphatic drainage, or MLD, is a type of manual manipulation of the skin, distinct from massage, that uses specific pressure levels and rhythmic circular movements to encourage the natural drainage of lymph. The lymphatic system depends on muscle contractions within lymph vessel walls and on skeletal muscle movement to carry lymph toward lymph nodes and ducts and back into the cardiovascular system, where waste products are cleared from body tissue.
