Advanced sleep phase disorder, abbreviated ASPD and also called the advanced sleep-phase type of circadian rhythm sleep disorder, is a condition marked by a recurrent pattern of sleepiness in the early evening, for example between 7 and 9 PM, and very early waking in the morning, for example between 2 and 4 AM. This advance of the sleep phase can disrupt social and work schedules and leads to shortened sleep and excessive sleepiness during the day. The timing of sleep and of melatonin levels is regulated by the body's central circadian clock, which is located in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus. This record describes the disorder as the source lead presents it and is not medical advice.
