Aichmophobia is a specific phobia, a morbid fear of sharp things. The name comes from the Greek aichme, meaning point, and phobos, meaning fear, and the fear is also called belonephobia or enetophobia. The general term is sometimes used to mean the more specific fear of needles, also called needle phobia or trypanophobia, which is an extreme and irrational fear of medical procedures involving injections or hypodermic needles. It should not be confused with visual looming syndrome, in which the patient does not fear sharp objects but feels pain or discomfort when looking at sharp objects nearby.
