Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, or ARFID, is a feeding or eating disorder in which a person significantly limits the volume or variety of food they consume, leading to malnutrition, weight loss or psychosocial problems. Unlike anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, body image disturbance is not a root cause of ARFID. The disorder falls under psychiatry and was formally included as a distinct diagnosis in the DSM-5 in 2013, corresponding to ICD-10 code F50.8 and ICD-11 code 6B83.
