Esophageal cancer is cancer that begins in the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach. It most often presents as difficulty swallowing and unintended weight loss, typically at an already advanced stage, which contributes to its comparatively poor prognosis. Its two main forms, squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma, differ in their typical location in the esophagus and their leading risk factors.
