Cardiomyopathy is a group of diseases that primarily affect the heart muscle itself rather than its blood supply or valves. Early disease may cause few or no symptoms, but as it progresses, shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling of the legs can develop as the heart's pumping ability weakens into heart failure. Affected individuals also carry an increased risk of irregular heart rhythms and sudden cardiac death.
