CD25 deficiency, also called interleukin 2 receptor alpha deficiency, is an immunodeficiency disorder associated with mutations in the IL2RA gene, which encodes the CD25 chain of the high-affinity interleukin-2 receptor. The mutations lead to a defective chain or none at all, and the resulting syndrome is described as IPEX-like or as a form of severe combined immunodeficiency. In one patient, CD4 lymphocytes lacking CD25 responded poorly to interleukin-2, with greatly reduced secretion of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10. The source adds that the deficiency raises susceptibility to viral infections and possibly fungal and bacterial infections, and may impair the expansion of CD8 and CD4 lymphocytes and natural killer cells. This entry records what the source reports and is not medical advice.
