Cleft lip is a condition present at birth in which the upper lip has an opening extending from the edge of the mouth, sometimes reaching into the nose, and it may affect one side, both sides, or the middle. Cleft palate is a related condition in which the roof of the mouth has an opening into the nasal cavity, and the two conditions, whether occurring separately or together, are broadly referred to as orofacial clefts. They are among the more common types of birth defect affecting the face.
