A cyst is a closed sac within the body, distinguished from the surrounding tissue by a distinct envelope, and formed by a cluster of cells whose shell is abnormal in appearance and behavior compared with the tissue around it. Cysts fall under pathology and general surgery and occur across many body systems, including the reproductive organs, skin, head and neck, chest, abdomen, nervous system and musculoskeletal system. Their causes vary and can be dysplastic, metaplastic, neoplastic or, in some cases such as hydatid or cysticercal cysts, infectious.
