Dehydration is a lack of total body water that disrupts metabolic processes, occurring when free water loss exceeds intake, often from excessive sweating, illness, or inadequate water consumption. Its hallmarks include thirst and neurological changes such as headaches, general discomfort, loss of appetite, nausea, decreased urine volume, confusion, unexplained tiredness, and seizures. Most people can tolerate a 3 to 4 percent decrease in total body water without difficulty, while a 5 to 8 percent decrease can cause fatigue and dizziness.
