Diplacusis

Diseases of the Ear and Mastoid Process

Diplacusis, also called diplacusis binauralis, binauralis disharmonica or interaural pitch difference, is a hearing disorder in which one sound is heard at different pitches by the two ears. It is usually experienced as a secondary symptom of sensorineural hearing loss, although not every patient with that kind of hearing loss has diplacusis or tinnitus. The onset is usually sudden and may follow acoustic trauma, such as an explosive noise, or occur during an ear infection. Some people have the effect permanently, while in others it clears up by itself. Because it distorts how pitch is heard, it can be especially disruptive for people whose work depends on acute hearing, such as musicians, sound engineers and performing artists.
