Diverticulitis is inflammation or infection of small pouches, called diverticula, that can form in the wall of the colon. It typically causes abdominal pain, most often in the lower left side, along with fever and a change in bowel habits. The condition arises as a complication of diverticulosis, the presence of the pouches themselves, which is common and usually causes no symptoms on its own.
