Endophthalmitis, or endophthalmia, is inflammation of the interior cavity of the eye, usually caused by an infection, and is a possible complication of intraocular surgeries, particularly cataract surgery. Infection may be bacterial or fungal and is classified as exogenous, from direct inoculation, or endogenous, from bloodborne organisms; incidence is 0.04 to 0.1 percent after cataract surgery but rises to 0.9 to 10 percent after penetrating eye trauma, while endogenous cases make up 2 to 15 percent of all endophthalmitis. Roughly 20 percent of cases in both categories result in severe vision loss, and the condition requires immediate medical attention to reduce that risk.
