Nodding disease, also called nodding syndrome, is a mentally and physically disabling disease that affects children aged three and above and continues into adulthood. It was first described in 1962 in secluded mountainous regions of Tanzania. Since then sporadic outbreaks have been reported in South Sudan and Uganda, and again in Sudan, where the largest outbreak has run from 2016 to the present. Since 2019 cases have also been identified in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic and Cameroon. The source states that its cause is unknown and that no cure yet exists. The record describes what has been reported and is not medical advice.
