Essential thrombocythemia, abbreviated ET, is a rare chronic blood cancer of the kind called a myeloproliferative neoplasm, studied within hematology. It is characterised by the overproduction of platelets, also called thrombocytes, by megakaryocytes in the bone marrow. It belongs to the group of blood cancers in which the bone marrow produces too many white cells, red cells or platelets. Although this is rare, essential thrombocythemia may develop over time into acute myeloid leukemia or into myelofibrosis.
