Generalized anxiety disorder is a mental health condition marked by persistent, excessive worry about a wide range of everyday events and activities that the person finds difficult to control, occurring more days than not for at least six months. It is commonly accompanied by physical symptoms such as restlessness, muscle tension, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability and sleep disturbance. It is one of the most common anxiety disorders and was formally distinguished as its own diagnostic category in the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1980.
