Glycogen storage disease type V, also written GSD5 or GSD-V and widely known as McArdle's disease, is a metabolic disorder classed among the metabolic myopathies. More specifically it is a muscle glycogen storage disease, and the source names its cause as a deficiency of myophosphorylase. Its incidence is reported as about one in 100,000, which the source describes as roughly the same as glycogen storage disease type I. The condition was first reported in 1951 by the British physician Brian McArdle of Guy's Hospital in London, and his name remains attached to it. This entry records what the source's opening summary supports; it is a reference record and not medical advice.
