Gymnophobia is a fear of nudity, classed as a phobia, and the same word is also used for prejudice against nudity or against nudists. People with the fear feel anxiety about seeing other people naked, about being seen naked, or both, even when they recognise the fear as irrational. Sources of the fear can include body dysmorphia, trauma, fear of sexual assault, general anxiety about sexuality, or a belief that one is physically inferior or left exposed and unprotected. Most sufferers manage to function in ordinary society by avoiding situations such as changing rooms, showers, gyms, pools, beaches, hotel rooms and medical facilities. The condition may be regarded as an anxiety disorder or hypochondriasis when the person cannot control the phobia or it interferes with daily life and medical examinations. The name comes from the Greek gumnos, naked, and phobos, fear, and the related phobia dishabiliophobia is the fear of undressing in front of others.
