Gynandromorphism

Congenital Malformations and Chromosomal Abnormalities

Gynandromorphism is the phenomenon in which an individual organism has both female and male phenotypes because of a genetic chimerism of sex chromosomes in cells across the body. It is most easily recognised in species with strong sexual dimorphism, and it is most often documented in the field of entomology. An individual showing the trait is called a gynandromorph. The term comes from the Greek words gyne, meaning female, aner, meaning male, and morphe, meaning form. Gynandromorphism is distinct from both intersexuality and hermaphroditism, although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, and it should not be confused with them when reading older literature on the subject.
