Human African Trypanosomiasis

Infectious and Parasitic Diseases

Human African trypanosomiasis, also known as sleeping sickness, is a parasitic disease caused by trypanosome parasites transmitted through the bite of an infected tsetse fly, found only in parts of sub-Saharan Africa. The infection progresses from an early stage marked by fever and swollen lymph nodes to a later stage in which the parasite crosses into the central nervous system and disrupts sleep patterns, along with other neurological and psychiatric symptoms. Left untreated, the disease is generally fatal.
