Hyperparathyroidism is an increase in parathyroid hormone levels in the blood, occurring from a disorder either within the parathyroid glands or as a response to external stimuli. With long-standing hyperparathyroidism, the most common symptom is kidney stones, and other symptoms may include bone pain, weakness, depression, confusion, and increased urination; both primary and secondary forms may result in osteoporosis.
