Hypoparathyroidism is decreased function of the parathyroid glands with underproduction of parathyroid hormone. It can result from surgical injury, autoimmune damage, or inherited genetic factors, and leads to low levels of calcium in the blood, often causing cramping and twitching of muscles or tetany, along with paresthesia, fatigue, headaches, and bone pain. In severe cases patients may experience seizures, cardiac arrhythmias, or airway spasms.
