Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy

Pregnancy, Childbirth and the Puerperium

Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, also known as obstetric cholestasis, cholestasis of pregnancy, jaundice of pregnancy, or prurigo gravidarum, is a condition in which cholestasis occurs during pregnancy, typically presenting with itching and capable of causing complications for both mother and fetus. Itching is a common symptom of pregnancy, affecting around 23 percent of women, and is usually benign, but itching localized to the palms and soles may signal this condition and warrants medical attention. Onset is typically in the third trimester, though it can begin as early as seven weeks.
