Lymphedema

Lymphedema, also spelled lymphoedema, is localized swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system, the network that helps the immune system and returns fluid from body tissues back into the bloodstream. It most often develops as a complication of cancer treatment or of parasitic infection, though genetic disorders can also cause it, and because the lymphatic system is compromised, affected tissue is at high risk of infection. The condition is incurable and tends to worsen over time, but it can be managed with combined decongestive therapy, a mix of compression, careful skin care, exercise, and manual lymphatic drainage; diuretic drugs do not help. It is a substantial global health problem, estimated to affect around 200 million people worldwide across its many forms and degrees of severity.
