Madelung's deformity is usually characterised by malformed wrists and wrist bones, and it is often associated with Leri-Weill dyschondrosteosis. It can affect both wrists or only one. The condition has been recognised only within roughly the past hundred years. It is named for Otto Wilhelm Madelung, a German surgeon who lived from 1846 to 1926 and described it in detail, although others had noted it earlier: Guillaume Dupuytren mentioned it in 1834, Auguste Nelaton in 1847 and Joseph-Francois Malgaigne in 1855. The record therefore shows a deformity seen by several European surgeons before one of them gave it a full account and lent it his name.
