Mania is a psychiatric behavioral syndrome defined by a state of abnormally elevated mood together with hyperactivity and risky behavior. During a manic episode a person's emotions can shift rapidly in response to surrounding stimuli, and the elevated mood may be euphoric or dysphoric; common symptoms include flight of ideas, pressured speech, increased energy, a decreased need for sleep and hyperactivity. The DSM requires abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive or irritable mood with increased activity or energy lasting at least one week and present most of the day, nearly every day, for diagnosis. A single manic episode usually indicates bipolar I disorder, while hypomania may signal bipolar II disorder; in severe cases psychotic symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations can emerge, and over five percent of the general population has experienced mania or hypomania to some degree.
