Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis

Diseases of the Genitourinary System

Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, abbreviated MPGN, is a form of glomerulonephritis, an inflammatory disease of the filtering units of the kidney. It is caused by deposits in the mesangium of the kidney glomerulus together with thickening of the glomerular basement membrane. These changes activate the complement system, which in turn damages the glomeruli. The lead of the source reports that MPGN accounts for roughly four percent of primary renal causes of nephrotic syndrome in children and seven percent in adults. It should not be confused with membranous glomerulonephritis, a different condition in which the basement membrane is thickened but the mesangium is not affected. The record here describes the condition as medicine understands it and is not medical advice.
