Meningitis-retention syndrome, abbreviated MRS, is an inflammatory neurological condition that combines acute aseptic meningitis with urinary retention caused by an underactive detrusor, the bladder muscle that empties the bladder. Aseptic meningitis is inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord without a bacterial infection being found. The syndrome was first described in 2005, which makes it a recently recognised entity, and its prevalence is still unknown. This entry records the condition as a named clinical entity and is not medical advice; diagnosis and care belong to a qualified clinician.
