Micronutrient deficiency is a sustained shortage in the supply of the vitamins and minerals the body needs for growth, development and good health. Because several of these compounds are essential and must come from the diet, deficiency most often results from inadequate intake. It can also arise from poor absorption in the intestine, from certain chronic illnesses, or from raised requirements for the nutrients. The term covers shortages of vitamins and minerals in general rather than one named disease.
