Necrophobia is a specific phobia of dead organisms, such as corpses, and of things associated with death, including coffins, tombstones, funerals and cemeteries. The fear may be constant or may be set off by a trigger such as a close encounter with a dead animal or the funeral of a relative or friend. The word comes from the Greek nekros, meaning corpse, and phobos, meaning fear. The term is also used in a cultural sense for a fear of the dead held by a whole group, for example a belief that the spirits of the dead will return to haunt the living.
