Nomophobia

Mental and Behavioural Disorders

Nomophobia, short for no-mobile-phone phobia, is the fear of being without a working mobile phone or of losing access to one, and has been discussed in mental health contexts as a symptom of problematic digital media use, although its clinical definition is not yet standardized and it does not appear in the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Researchers have proposed treating it as a specific phobia under the earlier DSM-IV framework, and it is more commonly described as a behavioral addiction that shares features with substance addiction rather than a fear in the classic sense. People affected by nomophobia often turn to their phone seeking comfort in response to anxiety, low self-esteem, insecure attachment or emotional instability, and some rely on constant phone use to meet emotional or relationship needs that would otherwise go unmet, producing a pattern of compulsive checking and distress when separated from the device.
