Otitis media is a group of inflammatory diseases affecting the middle ear. One main type, acute otitis media, is a rapidly developing infection that usually causes ear pain, and in young children can lead to pulling at the ear, increased crying, poor sleep, and sometimes fever. A second main type, otitis media with effusion, typically causes no pain but involves fluid buildup behind the eardrum that can affect hearing.
