Pemphigoid is a group of rare autoimmune blistering diseases of the skin and mucous membranes. Its general appearance resembles that of pemphigus, but unlike pemphigus it does not show acantholysis, the loss of connections between skin cells, which is the feature that separates the two groups. Pemphigoid is more common than pemphigus. It occurs slightly more often in women than in men, and it is more common in people older than 70 than in younger people.
