Peritonitis is inflammation of the peritoneum, the lining of the inner wall of the abdomen and the covering of the abdominal organs, and it can be localized or generalized. Symptoms may include severe pain, swelling of the abdomen, fever, or weight loss, with part or all of the abdomen tender to the touch. Complications can include shock and acute respiratory distress syndrome.
