Phonophobia

Mental and Behavioural Disorders

Phonophobia is a specific phobia involving a disproportionate fear of or aversion to particular sounds, also known by the alternative names ligyrophobia and sonophobia. People with the condition experience anxiety, panic and avoidance when confronted with feared sounds, which can range from loud noises to quiet, everyday sounds such as a door closing or dishes in a kitchen. It is distinguished from related conditions that also involve sound sensitivity: hyperacusis causes physical discomfort or pain from ordinary sounds rather than fear, misophonia produces anger or disgust toward specific trigger sounds rather than anticipatory dread, and tinnitus involves perceiving sound that is not externally present. Sound sensitivity of this kind can also accompany migraine episodes, and accurate diagnosis depends on separating phonophobia from these overlapping conditions.
