Diseases of the Skin and Subcutaneous Tissue

An abnormal skin reaction to sunlight, distinct from ordinary sunburn, caused by the buildup of photosensitizing compounds under the skin. These compounds can come from ingested plants or drugs or from inborn errors of pigment metabolism, particularly in heme synthesis, and the reaction is seen mainly in herbivorous and omnivorous animals though it can occur in carnivores too.
