Primary polydipsia, together with psychogenic polydipsia, names a group of forms of polydipsia in which a person drinks excessive amounts of fluid although no physiological stimulus is prompting the thirst. Psychogenic polydipsia is caused by psychiatric disorders, often schizophrenia, and is frequently accompanied by a sensation of dry mouth. Several conditions that have polydipsia as a symptom are not psychogenic, among them early type 2 diabetes, primary hyperaldosteronism, zinc deficiency and some forms of diabetes insipidus, which is why primary polydipsia is a diagnosis of exclusion, reached only after those other causes have been considered. This record describes the condition as the source lead presents it and is not medical advice.
