Pure red cell aplasia, also called erythroblastopenia, is a type of aplastic anemia that affects the precursors of red blood cells but usually not those of white blood cells. In this condition the bone marrow stops producing red blood cells, so the red cell line is selectively lost while the other blood cell lines are largely spared. Several different causes can lead to it, which is why it is described as having multiple etiologies rather than a single origin. According to the source, the condition was first described by Paul Kaznelson in 1922. The atlas records it as a disorder of the blood and immune mechanism, a narrow failure of one cell lineage within the bone marrow. This entry does not give medical advice.
