Renal cysts and diabetes syndrome, abbreviated RCAD, is a form of maturity onset diabetes of the young, the group of diabetes types that appear early in life and run in families rather than following the usual pattern of type 1 or type 2 diabetes. It is also known as MODY 5 and as HNF1B-MODY, names that place it as the fifth numbered MODY type and tie it to the HNF1B gene. As its name states, the syndrome combines diabetes with cysts of the kidney. This entry records the condition as a named clinical syndrome and is not medical advice; diagnosis and care belong to a qualified clinician.
