Rotavirus infection is caused by rotaviruses, which are the most common cause of diarrheal disease among infants and young children worldwide. Nearly every child is infected with a rotavirus at least once by the age of five, and while immunity builds with each infection so that later infections tend to be milder, adults are rarely affected. The virus spreads through the fecal-oral route, infecting and damaging cells lining the small intestine and causing gastroenteritis.
