A pattern of intense, undirected defensive behavior, including biting, clawing, hissing, an arched back, and violent alternating limb movements, produced experimentally in animals after removal of the cerebral cortex. Researchers have argued the behavior occurs without any accompanying inner experience of rage, and it can be reversed by small lesions placed in the hypothalamus.
