Shopping addiction is characterized by an eagerness to buy unnecessary or superfluous things and a lack of impulse control when it comes to shopping. It is a concept similar to compulsive buying disorder, also called oniomania, but it usually carries a more psychosocial perspective and is often viewed as a drug-free addiction in the same family as addiction to gambling, the internet or video games. Its status is contested: the source notes that there is still debate over whether less recognized impulsive behaviors such as compulsive buying can be conceptualized as addictions at all. The lead does not give diagnostic criteria, prevalence, causes or treatment, so those are left for further sourced work rather than claimed here.
