Specific phobia is a mental health condition involving a marked, persistent and excessive fear of a particular object or situation, such as heights, flying, injections, certain animals or enclosed spaces, that is disproportionate to the actual danger posed and leads to avoidance or significant distress. It is among the most common of all mental disorders, and specific subtypes are traditionally grouped into categories including animal, natural environment, blood-injection-injury, and situational phobias.
